Typhoon-hit provinces, LGUs urged to invest in early warning system for agriculture - Jan. 9, 2013

Rice Watch and Action Network urged the provincial and LGU officials of typhoon-ravaged provinces of Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental to invest in early warning system for agriculture to protect the communities and their livelihood from the fury of extreme weather events, such as Typhoon Pablo that ravaged the provinces’ main agricultural crop, bananas.

Pinangangambahan ngayon ng grupong Rice Watch Action Network na nakalalason na ang lumang bigas na ilang taon nang nakatambak sa bodega ng National Food Authority. Ayon naman sa NFA, ipasusuri muna nila kung ligtas pa itong kainina bago nila ibenta.

WE HAVEN’T really gotten over the impact of the 2008 food crisis, and yet another one is unfolding. Global food prices have hit record levels, largely driven by soaring prices of cereals, meat and dairy products.

Crude prices have also surged amid the conflict in North Africa and protests in the Middle East.

Rising fuel costs mean higher prices of essential commodities, transport and, of course, food.
